Review of freight demand in the Kingborough and Huon Valley areas- 31 December 2008

In September 2008, the Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council commissioned Rural Development Services Pty Ltd to undertake a survey of freight logistics issues in the Kingborough and Huon Valley areas.   Rural Development Services Pty Ltd has now provided the Council with its final report which identifies actions that can be realistically undertaken to improve logistics efficiencies in these areas.   The report found that more freight is being transported inwards compared to outwards with outwards capacity often being under-utilised.   Larger industries and producers appear to be well organised in relation to freight logistics but smaller industries and producers are not so well organised and could do with more support but, generally speaking, the regions freight requirements are well serviced by a network of local, regional and state-wide freight service providers.   For a full copy of the report click report (report...).

Review of Australia's quarantine and biosecurity arrangements - report and federal Government's preliminary response - 19 December 2008

In February 2008, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Hon. Tony Burke MP announced a comprehensive, independent review of Australia’s quarantine and biosecurity arrangements. This review included, but was not limited to, a wide-ranging assessment of the functions of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and Biosecurity Australia. In September 2008, the review panel provided its report - One Biosecurity: a working partnership, to the Minister. Jobs crisis looming for Australia's transport and logistics industry - 11 December 2008

A critical shortage of skilled workers over the next decade in Australia’s $63 billion a year transport and logistics industry could threaten the nation’s future economic growth.   A poor community perception of the industry – leading to an inability to attract workers - is the major contributing factor to the looming jobs shortage. The grave warning was made today by the State’s peak freight transport advisory group - the Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council - as it unveiled a Tasmanian version of a national whole-of-industry careers information program designed to attract people to the industry (more...)

Review of Seafood Freight Logistics in Tasmania - 15 October 2008

In February 2006, the Council undertook a survey of freight logistics issues within the seafood industry in Tasmania.   The survey was actioned due to concerns being expressed within the industry about logistics issues which were impacting on the viability of the sector and the Council was keen to gain a greater understanding of the issues and identify where improvements could be achieved.   The Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council (TSFIC), with the assistance of the Council, established a Working Group to develop and implement a Tasmanian seafood industry freight logistics strategic plan.      The strategic plan has been finalised and has been approved by TSIC and the Council.    For a full copy of the strategic plan click on Plan.   (Plan...)

Recommendations from Senate Inquiry on workforce challenges in the transport sector - 24 October 2007

The Senate Standing Committee on Employment, Workplace Relations and Education has recently issued its report and findings and has come up with a number of recommendations for further action to overcome the significant workforce challenges facing the transport industry.   A summary report and details of the major recommendations in the report are attached(report).

Supply Chain Quality Monitoring Case Study Reports - 24 September 2007

The Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council recently undertook supply-chain specific research to identify key procedures needed to maintain integrity of product as it moves along the chain and developed case study material of best practice for the product/industry and type of supply-chain.   Copies of the reports are now available – W. Spirit of Tasmania Dry Docking Problem - 25 July 2007

Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme (TFES) Update - 31 May 2007

The Productivity Commission released its final report on the TFES on 24 May 2007. As the Federal Government had already announced that the TFES is to continue, the Productivity Commission focused its final report on ways to improve the operation of TFES.   Recommendations include TFES payments should be based on the assessed cost disadvantage of individual shipments but will only be payable on the basis of evidence of actual wharf-to-wharf costs, administration and auditing of TFES should focus more intensively on the verification of wharf-to-wharf costs, if there is continued evidence of gaming and overcompensation of freight cost disadvantage, a flat rate of assistance should be introduced from July 2010 and the Tasmanian Wheat Freight Scheme should pay the same level of assistance per tonne to wheat shipped in containers and in bulk - wheat should no longer be eligible for assistance under the TFES. Stone Fruit Industry Review - 24 May 2007

The Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council has recently undertaken a review of the stone fruit industry in Tasmania to determine if there will be any transport and logistics issues facing the industry in the next few years.  Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc., the industry body representing around 250 fruit growers in Tasmania including apple, pair, cherry and other stone fruits estimates that, over the next five years, there is potential for the stone fruit industry to treble its production which in turn will have to be freighted to their markets.   Consultation with Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc. and other people in the industry indicated that there are no perceived transport and logistics issues facing the industry in the future and that there is sufficient freight capacity available to move this increased production to market.  In light of this information, the Council has agreed that no further action is required on this matter at present.  (Review report..)

West Coast / Circular Head Freight Study - 28 February 2007

In September 2006, the Council commissioned Davey & Maynard Pty Ltd to undertake a survey of freight logistics issues in the West Coast and Circular Head areas.   The study was actioned to collect reliable data about freight flows to and from Tasmania’s West Coast and Circular Head communities, to analyse the data objectively and to propose actions to increase efficiency and capacity utilisation of available freight infrastructure and equipment to the West Coast and Circular Head areas. Davey & Maynard Pty Ltd has now provided the Council with its final report which identifies actions that can be realistically undertaken to improve logistics efficiencies among these industries. The Council is currently drawing up an action plan in regard to the recommendations contained within the report.   (Report...)

Review of Seafood Freight Logistics in Tasmania - 20 October 2006

In February 2006, the Council undertook a survey of freight logistics issues within the seafood industry in Tasmania.   The survey was actioned due to concerns being expressed within the industry about logistics issues which were impacting on the viability of the sector and the Council was keen to gain a greater understanding of the issues and identify where improvements could be achieved.   The Council is currently discussing potential outcomes of the report with the Tasmanian Fishing Industry Council (TFIC), which has agreed to action the reports primary recommendation and is working on the establishment of a Working Group to develop and implement a Tasmanian seafood industry freight logistics strategic plan.      TFIC has undertaken to arrange the first meeting of the Working Group before the middle of November 2006.    For a full copy of the report click on Report.   (Report...)

Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme (TFES) Update - 15 September 2006

The recently released Productivity Commission draft report recommends phasing out the TFES.   The Prime Minister has since promised, despite this, that the TFES will remain in force. Members are invited to examine the draft report and comment on it in writing and/or by attending public hearings which will be held in Hobart on 17 October 2006 and Launceston on 18 October 2006.   The final report is due for completion by 21 December 2006. Strategic Plan 2006-07 to 2007-08 (1 August 2006)
The Council recently approved its Strategic Plan for 2006-07 and 2007-08.   The Strategic Plan outlines the Council’s objectives for the next two years, identifies key issues facing the industry, identifies strategies to be undertaken and also details proposed project activities proposed to be undertaken in the coming two years  (more...)

Australian Logistics Assured (1 August 2006)
Australian Logistics Assured (ALA) in Tasmania was launched by Hon. Bryan Green, Minister for Infrastructure, Energy & Resources,on 26 May 2006.  The Australian Logistics Assured program (ALA) is a system of integrated performance standards, covering all members of the export cold chain. Through development of full chain performance standards including time and temperature, and a comprehensive monitoring program to verify compliance, the ALA system provides your supply chain with a "Cold Chain Guarantee". ALA brings together existing supply chain quality assurance systems to better maintain product specifications throughout the entire supply chain.    A number of Tasmanian companies have shown interest in participation in the program.
